Alongside our creative work with the Here Today Here Tomorrow collective, we have always pursued our own individual academic work. We all enjoyed HTHT as an extension of our degree training where we could experiment with mixing theory and practice in the real world.
In the time since the shop closed we have come to realise just how valuable the space was for exploration and experimentation, as a way of investing in a community and interacting with people in personal and meaningful ways. It is hard to measure and describe the true value of small alternative enterprises to local communities, to sustainability discourse and for the future of the fashion industry.
As one attempt to meet this challenge, in 2018 we co-wrote an academic paper with the aim of articulating and defining the value and purpose of HTHT. This paper, 'Connected Spaces: experimental and social business practices of Here Today Here Tomorrow' was presented at the Global Fashion Conference in 2018. It is based on our own experience and observations, in a particular place and time. We hope that by sharing this with a wider audience, we can help try and ensure opportunities are created and space is available for other like-minded enterprises in the future. This paper is soon to be published in the book What’s going on? a discourse in fashion, design and sustainability, edited by Dilys Williams.
